The ADHD Laundry Soultion

As an individual with ADHD, I am not a real big fan of doing laundry, as it is one task that is very mundane and a task that seems to never end.  However, the trick to doing laundry when you have ADHD is to create a system and a plan to get things done can ease the load (excuse the pun) and this is where my list of helpful laundry tips comes in.

Create a Routine - First is to create a routine that will work for you and your home. There are a lot of different ways to do your laundry, here is a few to look at and decide which one works best for you.

  • Assign a day(s) each week for different types of items. For example bedding on Mondays, towels on Tuesdays and whites on Wednesdays ect.
  • Assign days of the week for each person in the house
  • Say that you will do a load of laundry from start to finish (wash, dry, fold and put away)

Have a Place for Each Task - If you have a difficult time to dry a lot of clothes in the space that you have, then you will start to get a back log and resent doing the laundry in the end. Find a place to dry, fold, put away and iron; this can make doing laundry as whole lot easier. Here are a few other tips to make your system flow really well.

  • Have a place for each family member to put their dirty laundry either in the main laundry basket or have one for each of the family.
  • Store the iron and ironing board so that you can grab it as and when needed so it is not a struggle.
  • Have a space for a basket so that you can quickly fold the clothes and putting them away much easier.

Use a Laundry Marker - If you have clothes that need special care (dry cleaning or hand washed) then mark them on the tag so that you can quickly scan the clothes before you wash something that shouldn’t be washed. (I learned this the hard way.)

Get Everyone To Help - Everything will go more smoothly if you get create a system where everyone can help. If people have a job to do (i.e. putting their own clothes away, doing a load of laundry on a specific day) then it will take some burden off of you. This may take some time to get going and but it is definitely one to consider. It also teaches children about responsibility and ownership which are great. It also teaches children about responsibility and ownership which are great life skills
