Anger in Adult ADHD and Temper Reducing Techniques

Adults with ADHD tend to show their emotions easily such as anger. When an adult with ADHD has difficulty maintaining their feelings, they become short tempered, snappy and may be an unpredictable person to spend time around. The following are some anger management tips for an adult with ADHD.  

·        Making a Decision to Leave – By monitoring how you are feeling, you can determine your level of your anger. If you are concerned, tell you partner, roommate ect, that you are taken a break and then immediately leave the area either to another room or out of the house depending on the severity of your concerns about your anger

·        Cooling Down – During your break, try to find activities which decrease your anger.  If you stay with friends or family be sure that they will help in this progress. Relaxation techniques or physical exercise may be helpful.  However do not engage in violent related activities such a chopping wood

·        Making a Decision to Return- At some point you will determine that u have cooled down enough to return. Some important signals that you are ready to return are: (a) you are not having thoughts of anger. (b) You are able to see the other person’s side and see where you may have been wrong. (c) Your body is more relaxed (d) you are able to talk in a calm and rational manner

·        Returning –After you are return, you and the person you had the argument with should agree when and where you should discuss the issues that were involved in the original argument. Do not demand that the other person discuss these issues immediately.

·        Post-Argument Discussion – At some point you and the other person will need to discuss the issue which began the argument if it is still unresolved. Choose a time when you are both able to discuss the issue calmly
