Dealing With Distractions In The Workplace

Distractibility is one of the most common features for an Adult with ADD/ADHD.  Your mind can wander on in some many different directions however, when your job requires you to do different tasks, distractions can be a disaster. Distractions can come in different forms, and once you figure out the excepted and the unexpected distractions, you can try to use the following techniques when dealing with them.

·        Turn Off E-Mail Alerts – Email alerts are one of the biggest causes of interruptions.  Turning these off will do wonders for work productivity

·        Set time slots for Colleague Interaction – If you play a role in a team, where your colleagues need to interact with you set a time slot where they can speak with you.  Instead of your colleagues stopping by your desk every ten minutes, letting them know a time of day can, you allow you to get some work done.

·        Phone Calls – When you hear the phone ring, you think that you always must answer it, even when we are concentrating on an important task/project.  Minimize phone call distractions by setting it directly to go to voice mail and set a time to listen to the messages later

·         Set a time to do repetitive & mundane tasks –  No matter how much you try to avoid it, you are going to do tasks that are repetitive and mundane.  For these tasks, choose a specific time to work on them.
