Three Steps to Succeeding in the Workplace with Adult ADHD

For an adult with ADHD, the workplace can be stressful and challenging.  If these challenges are not recognized and coping strategies aren’t developed, adults with ADHD may find themselves jumping from job to job, terminated and become increasingly frustrated.  However there are strategies that can be employed to maximize function, skills and satisfaction in the workplace

The following are some strategies on dealing with ADHD and the workplace.

·       Write a list – Keep a running list of your tasks and deadlines.  Prioritize this list based on when it is due and how much work the task requires.  This list can be kept in a notebook on your desk or your calendar on your computer.

·         Surround Yourself with the right people – One of the most important strategies for an individual with ADHD in the workplace is to have a support system.  Try to indentify a colleague who has strengths that will balance you and try to work close with them.  For example, if you have strong knowledge about one specific thing, but you are not a great writer, maybe you can try to collaborate with a colleague who is a strong writer.

·         Use A Reward System – After you finish a considerable amount of tasks/projects that, you found to be uninteresting, try to reward yourself with something that you enjoy doing.  For example, an hour of working on an uninteresting project can convert into a half hour checking your facebook page.  Think outside box when it comes to figuring out your reward system
