Which side of the summer fence did you fall over this year? Did your time go by so fast that your deck never got painted, the garage never got cleaned out or that trip never happened? Or was your summer full of fun of going to the beach, family BBQs. Either way the cooler nights or shorter days a leave an adult with ADHD feeling blue. We might feel bad that we missed the opportunity to get things done or may dread the thought of going back to school or work. So how an adult with ADHD beat these blues? How do we gear ourselves up for the next season? I’ve found a few solutions that has helped me and I liked to share them with you.
Focus On What You Were Able To Get Done – At times when we look at what we haven’t accomplished instead of what did accomplish. If you look back over the summer, you may be amazed on how much you actually did. Perhaps you goals were too big for the amount of time you had off? Maybe you only got to clean out half of the garage. Don’t dwell on the woulda-shoulda-coulda, congratulate yourself on what you did accomplish and smile at the memories you made.
Keep The Summer Feeling Going – If you are feeling a little blue about the summer days coming to an end, try to carry them with you into the fall season. Post some of your summer photos on your Facebook, or Instagram account. Plan a fall family picnic or start to plan your next summer adventures. Or even add your summery touches to your living space. Feng Shui practitioners believe that changing the art work and color scheme of your surroundings during the colder months to images that elicit the feeling of warmth which can cheer you up.
Embrace Autumn – September is a time of getting back in the routine of things and for some that is a welcome time: the kids going back to school, and the return of the predictable day can make us more stable and in control. Fall can be a great time to explore local activities, classes and harvest events. The cooler weather can make it easier to exercise, which may boost you need to get your fitness routine on track for the upcoming year.
The important thing to remember about beating the end of summer blues is not to dwell on it for too long. Next summer will be here faster than you know it. Now where did I put my snow shoes?
