Anxiety disorders occur more frequently in adults with ADHD than the general population. ADHD and anxiety disorder symptoms can overlap. They both cause restlessness,excessive worry,forgetful, disorganized and trouble settling down enough to fall asleep. Although the treatment of anxiety often includes medication, there are also some strategies adults with ADHD can use to reduce symptoms of anxiety.
- Be Grateful – Write down five things that you are grateful for in your life. When you focus on the things in life you are grateful for it helps you calm the emotional areas of your brain.
- Take a Time To Relax– There is a variety relaxation techniques such a mindfulness and deep breathing. Find a method that works best for you and use it whenever you feel stressed.
- Learn to face your fears-Unless your situation is life threatening, do not leave, run away or ignore what ever is causing you too be anxiety. It is like standing up to a bully, you must face the fear or concern head on or it will always have control over your life.
- Just Let It Go –You need to accept that you cant control everything. If you are holding to tightly,you may be causing yourself unnecessary stress which will only make things worse.
- Talk With A Friend– Let your friends and family know when you are emotionally overwhelmed. Seek professional help if needed, but don’t ever fight your battles alone
- AmplifyYour Fears- Talk to a close friend or family about your fear in the most dramatic way possible. Telling someone the story over and over again will make the fear seem silly.
- Laugh– Laughing releases stress releasing endorphin’s into your blood stream. They say laughter is the best medicine and can work wonders in relieving anxiety.
