If you are a woman with ADHD, you know that keeping a slow and steady pace can be a difficult thing to do. In the mind of a women with ADHD, there is so many tasks that need to get done and little time to do it in which sends your ADHD brain into overdrive. Building strategies to calm yourself can assist you slow down and focus more. Here are some of my established methods to slow down your ADHD brain:
Recognize The Feeling Of When You Are Going Into Overdrive- Notice the feeling of going into overdrive. Is it the feeling of rising heat in your body, a pulse in your head, a knot in your stomach or tightening in your chest. When you recognize these feelings of going into overdrive use as a sign to activate your internal pause button.
Hit The Pause Button– When you feel yourself going into overdrive, stop everything that you are doing and mentally say pause as if you are reaching for that remote control. Turn off your electronics, if you need to go into another room to take a few deep, slow breaths, you can stretch your arms, neck, back, arms and legs.
Write in a Journal- Maintaining of writing in a journal compels you to stop, think over and act out. It helps you to deal with feelings before you go into overdrive. Formulate a determination to do it every day- even if it is for only 10 minutes. Don’t worry about the sentence structure, and punctuation or flow since no one else is going to read it.
Laugh– Laughter is not only the best medicine but it also changes your mood, but research has shown that having a good laugh can decrease stress and increase concentration. So, take a brief moment to go on YouTube and watch a funny video or listen to a funny podcast on your Iphone or android.
