Overcoming frustration as women with ADHD can be very challenging due to a women feels so stuck that no matter how you try, you don’t seem to get anyway. Frustration can manifest in a number of ways and primarily affects task completion. Researchers have found that women with ADHD will quit a complex task in greater numbers compared to their peers without ADHD. Women with ADHD will often have strong emotional reactions to frustrations and will remember the frustrating situation long after it is over.
This is the point that many women with ADHD would say “I Quit” and give up. Before you do that , here are 8 ways to change your frustration around.
What Is Working in This Situation? Even if you feel like nothing is working, take a closer look and you will probably find at least something is going right. Once you found something that is working, how do you improve it. By asking yourself this question, you have taken yourself out of the negative mindset of “its hopeless” and focus on the positive. There is something that is working and that will give you a clue of what direction to focus on. You may find that even if your previous situations come up, you will be able to resolve them in the process of concentrating on your improvements.
Look At The Big Picture- Go back and look at the big picture. What was the desired outcome. Sometimes as a women with ADHD we get so wrapped up in one problem and trying to resolve that if we forget what we originally trying to accomplish. Try not to ask yourself “why did this happen”? Asking questions like that will keep you rooted in the past. It doesn’t offer a solution the the problem. The important thing is knowing the answers to the following questions: What do you want to happen differently this time & What do you need to do in order to get there?
Visualize A Positive Outcome To The Situation- There are times where a women with ADHD can get stuck on focusing on what you dont want to happen or fearing the worst thing that could happen. Instead see visualize yourself your desired outcome. What will it look like? What will it feel like? What will you say? How will you feel? This may inspire you to keep moving forward.
Take Steps Forward- When a women with ADHD gets seriously frustrated with a situation, you tend not to work on it anymore. It can be frustrating and and you are getting no where. Another thing that can happen is worry. Worrying is a waste of time and energy and doesn’t move you forward. In addition, Anything to avoid being in that situation can be far more less frustrating. Try to take a few steps forward, you will probably make it past this temporary hump.
With any situation, the soultion is to figure out what your options are, decide on a plan, focus and take action. By using the four steps above, you should find yourself running into fewer problems and feeling less frustrated. You may find that you are running into opportunties and know how to take advantage of them.
